Switzerland provides funding
Switzerland has reinforced its commitment to climate protection in developing countries as part of international cooperation. The Federal Council today decided to contribute USD 100 million to the initial capitalization of the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) was conceived during the 2010 UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun, where the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) decided to establish a new global climate fund. The purpose of the GCF is to assist developing countries with implementation of the UNFCCC. Activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change are financed, working closely with public and private stakeholders alike in developing countries. At the Pledging Conference 2014 in Berlin, several states, including Switzerland, announced pledges worth USD 10.2 billion. Allocation of the Fund's resources is decided by the Board, comprised of representatives of both developed and developing countries. As a member of the Fund's Board since 2012, Switzerland can exercise its influence on the GCF's decisions and allocation of the resources.
Switzerland prioritizes the following activities:
- promotion of low-emission energy production
- reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and the destruction of the tropical rainforests
- protection of vulnerable population groups and developing countries from climate-related natural disasters
