CLOC Eastern Africa Seed Money Grants: Call for proposals

The Seed Money Grant promotes research and education programs/projects between African and Swiss Higher Education Institutions. It aims to strengthen existing partnerships and is geared towards the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The Cluster of Cooperation (CLOC) Eastern Africa is a network created within the Swissuniversities Development and Cooperation network (SUDAC) and aims to foster North–South partnerships for research and education.

The CLOC Eastern Africa is planning a face-to-face / hybrid conference in Eastern Africa in 2023. In preparation of the conference, the CLOC is launching the Seed Money Grant to promote research and education cooperation projects to be presented at the conference.

The Seed Money Grant allows researchers to conduct pilot projects, exploratory studies and/or joint grant proposals (e.g. desk studies, field research, design education/training/capacity building modules, etc.) with key partners.

In this first call for proposals existing partnerships will be prioritized.

Eligibility

Eligible countries are: Ethiopia and Kenya. Participating researchers may come from the entire
CLOC Eastern Africa region.

The call is open to all scientific disciplines and fields of research, and targets researchers with
affiliations to African and Swiss Higher Education Institutions:

  • One applicant of a Higher Education Institutions in Ethiopia or Kenya identified as "main applicant (primary lead)"
  • One applicant of a Higher Education Institutions in Switzerland identified as "main applicant (co-lead)".
  • Additional participants from Higher Education Institutions or policy/practice organisations from Switzerland and/or the CLOC Eastern Africa region if relevant (Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Ruanda, Burundi, Uganda).

The main applicant (primary lead) - African Scientist must be affiliated to an accredited African
Higher Education Institution (university, university of applied sciences, university of teacher
education, college, etc.). He/she must hold a faculty or scientist position lasting until the end of
the project, and have several years of research or practical experience.

Grant amount: max. CHF 17,000 per project:

  • Up to CHF 15,000 for personnel costs, local travel, project consumables, material, and miscellaneous.
  • Up to CHF 2’000 for mobility expenses
