Marine sustainability in an age of changing oceans and seas
The sustainability of society is linked to that of the world’s oceans because they are essential for global food security, human health and climate regulation, and the livelihood of more than 3 billion people worldwide depends on the ecosystem services in the sea and on the coast. Yet, the world’s oceans are exposed to strains resulting from a wide spectrum of human activities, environmental pollution and growing coastal population.
These increasing burdens require a coherent and global marine policy, in particular concerning fisheries management, conservation of biodiversity and marine nature preservation. The report, jointly developed by the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, identifies the key aspects in this regard and highlights the main issues to be dealt with by science.
EASAC, the association of national science academies of the EU Member States, and including Switzerland and Norway, provides the EU bodies with scientific policy advice in the programme areas biosciences, energy and environment.
