Sustainability research and innovation are essential for addressing the pressing environmental, economic, and social challenges that Europe faces today. The Collaborative Action for Sustainability Research and Innovation (CASRI) project, funded by HORIZON Europe spans 2.5 years and aims to enhance the coordination and impact of sustainability research across the continent. CASRI brings together 17 key partners from 13 countries, along with the European Environment Agency, to identify gaps in knowledge, improve funding mechanisms, and strengthen the interaction between science, policy, and society. Sustainability challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion, require systemic and actionable solutions that are supported by robust scientific research. CASRI is designed to facilitate such solutions by aligning research efforts across Europe with the needs of policymakers and society at large. The project focuses on improving the effectiveness of science-policy collaboration and ensuring that research outputs are put into action to drive sustainable transitions.

CASRI focuses on three main themes:

  1. Research agendas and knowledge gaps
  2. Funding mechanisms for sustainability research
  3. The Science-Policy-Practice Interactions

A critical part of the CASRI project involves creating a funding mechanism that goes beyond national borders, ensuring that sustainability research and innovation are properly funded and implemented. By bringing together funders from across Europe, CASRI will facilitate joint calls for proposals and ensure that the identified research priorities are supported through coordinated funding efforts.

Activities of Sustainability Research Initiative:

At CASRI, we are dedicated to enhancing sustainability research and innovation by actively engaging key stakeholders across Switzerland. Our activities focus on bridging the gaps between research, funding, and policy to address urgent sustainability challenges.

To meet our ambitious goals, the Sustainability Research Initiative and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) are actively engaging with key players in sustainability research. We have connected with over 20 Swiss stakeholders, including representatives from research institutions, funding bodies, think tanks, and government agencies. Through these interviews, we gathered crucial insights into the existing knowledge gaps, explored effective funding mechanisms, and examined the opportunities to strengthen the science-policy-practice interactions.
